What's a small lighthouse doing underneath the towering George Washington Bridge in the Manhattan neighborhood of Washington Heights? And how did it escape the wrecking ball thanks in part to a 1942 children's book? It's time to learn about New York City's most famous lighthouse, while gaining rare access inside the historic structure.
Join New York Adventure Club as we take a private trip inside Jeffrey’s Hook Lighthouse. Erected in 1880 and moved to its current site in 1921, this lighthouse has become widely known as the children’s literary landmark “The Little Red Lighthouse and the Great Gray Bridge.”
Led by an Urban Park Ranger, our unique experience will include:
See you there!
*Please bring a water bottle and comfortable pair of shoes as we’ll be doing a lot of walking up and down hills! After visiting the lighthouse, you can exit the park by walking back up the hill to the starting location (.5 mile) or walking south along the walking trail to the W. 158th Entrance (1 mile).
**Please note that this tour maintains a moderately fast walking pace throughout the tour.
***Access to the top of the lighthouse requires climbing a steep spiral staircase and ducking through a tiny door.
